The Hot Dog List

Everyone who has a blog shares a common goal: to get more readers and links. So what’s the idea? It started with Mack Collier of The Viral Garden, who came up with the idea of giving a link boost to smaller bloggers: the ‘Z List’. As you may know, a blog’s success in terms of visibility really depends on links: more links = higher Technorati & Google Pagerank results = more people finding you. I published a Z list on my blog many months back and it worked out well for me. I even found some new blogs I continue to visit regularly.

Well, I am outright stealing this idea (sorry Mack, imitation is the highest form of flattery) and starting my own viral list called The Hot Dog List. The blogs I am listing are mostly from my Day in the Life Community on Bumpzee, recent visitors from Blog Catalog, plus a few others I enjoy. If I missed anyone, I apologize. Please promote the list anyway, IT WORKS!

**Instructions**

The premise is simple: Write a post, and copy and paste my list from below into it. Make sure the links are active and correct. If your blog is on that list, remove it because your post isn’t about self-promotion. Don’t worry, because if your name is on mine, it’s on others and will spread. Add your favorite deserving blogs to the top of the list (not compulsory). Publish the post. People will notice the incoming links, and hopefully write their own z-list posts. The result will be that we all get more links pointing to our blogs, and more readers — it’s got to be good!

Key Points

1. Create a new post on your blog.
2. Copy and Paste the entire list of blog links below
3. Add any blogs that you want to include near the top of the list. (Optional)
4. Include the blog where you first got the list from, on the list in your post.
5. Make sure that all links are copied intact (use the source, Luke).
6. Publish the Post.

How to make your own widget, splidget or badge for Blogger Blogs

This post is a "How to." It is my contribution to the millions of "low tech" bloggers out there (like me) who want to try learning about how to do stuff with their blog.

If you are here, you may notice I am plugging my internet experiment: Splibble. I want people to put my "Splidget" on their page. I didn't just go to the widget store and have the thing magically appear, I had to make it myself!

Here's how to do it step by step:

1. Go to Cool Text and pick a button or logo design. (hint: this trick will work with any image-I chose Cool Text because they have a customizable pixel badge). Follow their simple instructions on how to customize the look of your badge. Once you've finalized that, down load it and save it to your computer.

2. Open a new post in your blogger blog. Use the "compose" tab!!

3. Put your pixel badge into the post by inserting it as a picture into your post. I switch to "Edit HTML" here so I can place the image where I want in relation to the text, like this (make sure you click back to "Compose" for the next step):



4. Click on the image, then click the insert hyperlink button and add your link.

5. Click "Edit HTML" again and find the code for your new badge. The code will look something like this:

6. Now just copy that code (looks like the code above) and paste it into your sidebar or anywhere you want! Once you pop the badge into your sidebar, you can delete the post and VOILA! You have your badge!
